Occupational safety brings the systematic, scientific work that protects a workplace and its employees together under a single framework.

Together with Law No. 6331 on Occupational Health and Safety and its accompanying regulations, Turkey now requires safer, healthier working environments for every workplace and employer — public sector included — regardless of headcount or field of activity, in order to prevent occupational accidents and diseases and minimize their effects. Retaining an Occupational Safety Specialist, a Workplace Physician, and Other Health Personnel has become mandatory.

The Occupational Health and Safety Law gives employers the option of meeting their obligations by contracting a “Joint Health and Safety Unit” (OSGB) — an entity established outside the workplace, authorized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, with the equipment and staff needed to provide OHS services to one or more workplaces.

The engagement of an Occupational Safety Specialist, Workplace Physician, and Other Health Personnel is phased in according to employee count and the workplace's hazard class, as set out in the Communiqué on Workplace Hazard Classes.

• Defining working conditions around flammable, explosive, and hazardous materials
• Defining storage conditions for flammable, explosive, and hazardous materials
• Carrying out chemical risk assessments
• Defining working conditions for chemical substances
• Defining storage conditions for chemical substances
• Carrying out personal protective equipment risk assessments
• Advising the employer on the required Personal Protective Equipment, its distribution, and correct use
• Carrying out the necessary preliminary work on electrical safety
